This year to celebrate NBHAAD in NC, free screenings of the film “Thicker Than Blood” will be held across the state. The goal of this film is to dispel myths and increase awareness and knowledge about HIV, homosexuality, and the stigma surrounding these issues; and to encourage discussion that addresses the social, cultural and structural barriers faced by HIV+, LGBTQ community members, and even persons who are unaware of their HIV status. Highlighting the stigma and challenges of living with HIV, as well as the often hidden intolerance of LGBTQ-members in the Black/African-American community, “Thicker Than Blood” raises thought in the mind and strikes an emotional chord in the heart. This film will create an opportunity for all community members who see the film to discuss stigma and discrimination with an HIV physician and public health experts in the area.
This film will be screened in Raleigh, North Carolina at 7:00 pm at the Wake County Commons Building, 4011 Carya Dr., with support from Second Glance Productions, the HIV/STD Health Equity Program, Wake County Human Services and the LGBT Center of Raleigh.
"This film will be screened in multiple cities throughout North Carolina, Louisiana, Virginia, Washington, DC, and Georgia. The film contains some adult language and situations, so mature audiences are recommended. The screening is free and open to the public, and will include light refreshments and giveaways.
Short Synopsis of the Film:
“Thicker Than Blood” tells the story of Jordan, a young man who returns home for the first time in three years to celebrate his older brother’s promotion to partner in a prestigious law firm. During what’s supposed to be a joyous afternoon of family, friends, and food, secrets are revealed, masks are uncovered, and some things are said that just can’t be taken back. A once fairly tight-knit family is left broken and faced with the task of trying to figure out how to pick up the pieces and put them back together before losing each other… forever.
